Celebrate spooky season with some dark and chocolatey halloween rice krispie treats! These rice krispies are a snap with six ingredients that don’t require baking in the oven – just some cocoa krispies cereal, dark chocolate chips, gooey marshmallows and plenty of fun sprinkles. And butter of course. These come together in 20 minutes, so you can make them all October long.

What makes these halloween rice krispie treats?

No reason – I just want them to be. I love making rice krispie treats or brownies and swapping out the different colored sprinkles for different events and holidays. Load them up with your favorite chocolate chunks, M&M’s or krispies (the original cereal works well too).

Equipment needed for Halloween Rice Krispie Treats

Here’s all you need to make these krispies:

  • A 8 x 8 square pan metal – I use one from Sur La Table.
  • parchment paper – to keep the krispies from sticking.
  • A small saucepan – we will need one of these to melt the butter and marshmallows.
  • A large bowl – to combine all of our ingredients before they are poured into our pan.

Ingredients for Halloween Rice Krispie Treats

Here’s what to add to your grocery list:

  • unsalted butter – you will need one standard stick for this recipe.
  • 1 box of Cocoa Krispies Cereal – you could use regular rice krispies cereal as well.
  • 1 large bag of mini marshmallows – large marshmallows will work fine too, the mini ones just tend to melt faster into the butter, which is what we want.
  • dark chocolate chips – or mix it up with white and milk.
  • Halloween sprinkles – I bought these fun ones on Amazon! The eyeballs are included.
  • pinch of salt

That’s it, nice and short.

Tips for making rice krispie treats

Get a fresh box of cereal – I made a second batch of these treats with a box that was opened a couple weeks prior and these treats were STALE and crumbly.

Don’t be lackadaisical – it’s a good idea to work quickly when making these treats. Once the marshmallows have completely lost their shape and have formed a sauce, take your pan off the heat immediately and pour it into the bowl to prevent it from burning. Then pour the cereal on top quickly – the sauce will settle and harden so don’t overmix – get it into the pan quick before they dry down.

How to make Halloween Rice Krispie Treats

Let’s make them together!

Step 1

Prepare the sticky goodness. In a saucepan, heat the butter and a pinch of salt over medium heat. Once the butter is melted, add in the marshmallows. Allow the marshmallows to melt completely, stirring occasionally. The mixture will turn into a golden brown. Remove from the heat and pour the mixture into a large bowl.

Step 2

Add the cereal to the bowl and fold the cereal with a spatula until well combined. Pour in the chocolate chips and fold in gently as well.

Step 3

Form the squares. Line your square 8×8 square pan with parchment paper. Pour the cereal mixture into the pan and push it down firmly with a spatula until it fills all corners evenly. Sprinkle on as many Halloween sprinkles as you desire.

Step 4

Chill the pan in the fridge for about one hour or until the rice krispies feel firm and set. Remove from the pan, slice and enjoy.

Storage Directions

Once the rice krispie treats have set in the fridge, don’t put them back in there! Just leave them in an airtight container at room temperature. Eat within one week before they get stale!
